>Well in both cases these are amateurs, no training to speak of
No Training? Where did you get that info? Not from that video. At least I didn't get that info.
> and comparisons to “real” singers or whatever is irrelevant. The first is a 17 year old high school kid and the second works in a local hotel waiting tables. This is what I think the show is about really, finding rough talent that can be trained and polished into something special.
Those are freak shows. But the thing is that they have to make it look serious. So from time to time there will be somebody like Paul Potts to catch additional viewers that would never watch those shows otherwise. Some like to watch hoping they'll be the next one to catch the next Paul Potts. But all in all those will remain freak shows. Variation based on reality TV.
> The fact that Simon Cowell thinks they are good is telling – this is his business. Plus they both had huge crowd appeal.
You really think Simon Cowell adds credibility to those shows? He makes lots of money to be there and if by chance there's someone he can make serious money with then he'll help that person have a career while laughing all his way to the back. Like Simon Cowell likes to say it Cheezy. And by the way I guess that my use of career could be exagerated. Can two years (or less) be considered to be a career ;-)
When I watch those shows, American Idol for example, it's to hear Simon's comments harsh comments and to see the freaks that go there. As soon as the real singers are picked the show's over for me. American Idol or Sitcom hmmm sometimes it's hard to differentiate.
>The second guy is not weird - that is a judgement based on pre-conceived ideas of what his dress style normally implies (rocker) and it conflicts with his actual talents, male soprano. It creates a mental disconnect but that’s not his weirdness but rather our own pre-conceived judgement.
Guilty but there is not much I can do about that. I am what I am.
