This is interesting. I remember having talked about that a while ago.

I believe a sleep mode should remain in sleep mode, for various reasons, security as there is nobody there, as well as battery issues, such as you just mentioned. I have a lot of apps running and that is the only one behaving like this. So, I am assuming this is local to the app itself as to how it behaves in such mode. We'll see with upcoming versions as to know if this will be enhanced.
