Well, I don't mean to be squaring off against Hispanics in particular, but that is the majority here. I don't have a problem with bilingualism; my kids are bilingual. There hasn't been much push here for bilingual education in the public schools in quite some time because it caused a knee-jerk reaction in the non-Hispanic groups. However, there are several accredited private schools here that teach bilingually.

My son went to one of them for kindergarten. And he graduated grade K without being able to read a whit and his teachers sent him home with papers with simple English words, including his name (Johnny) consistently misspelled. I guess they were too busy teaching them the pre-Castro Cuban national anthem (and, no, that's no exageration).

>They are having a big debate over bilingual education here. What you are saying supports the anti-bilingual party-line. They are saying that its the politicos and people in power who want students taught in their native language rather than English.

>That way, since they can't read newspapers in English, the news they receive is the news in Spanish (or whatever) from their very same leaders. Who of course are only telling them what they want to tell them.

Big Time! That is exactly what happens here. Poliicians have pamphlets anonymously printed and distributed, in Spanish, that downright lie about issues.
