>Well, I don't mean to be squaring off against Hispanics in particular, but that is the majority here. I don't have a problem with bilingualism; my kids are bilingual. There hasn't been much push here for bilingual education in the public schools in quite some time because it caused a knee-jerk reaction in the non-Hispanic groups. However, there are several accredited private schools here that teach bilingually.

>My son went to one of them for kindergarten. And he graduated grade K without being able to read a whit and his teachers sent him home with papers with simple English words, including his name (Johnny) consistently misspelled. I guess they were too busy teaching them the pre-Castro Cuban national anthem (and, no, that's no exageration).

>Big Time! That is exactly what happens here. Poliicians have pamphlets anonymously printed and distributed, in Spanish, that downright lie about issues.
That's crazy. Here in Texas I took my daughter (kindergarten) off the bilingual program because they were going to teach her to read and write in Spanish only. This is a public school BTW.
That didn't make any sense to me. I figured I can teach her that at home, being that she speaks English/Spanish.
