Stability was the number one priority for Win2K. If that meant sacrificing compatability, then it was done. IMO, this is a better route. You may want t check with some hardware manufacturers, specifically Iomega and the whoever supplies Compaq with their DC/RW drives to see if they have Win2K drivers.
