Though the syntax is 100% correct it occasionally errors (on only some machines) with a data type mishmatch error. It makes me wonder if the problem is not just a bug in VFP. I thought about a timing error; did you test this one more than one machine ? what is the configuration of the problem machines ?

Also to Auke:

I think there was once a bug like this, where if you were at EOF() of a selected file, the SEEK() function did not work correctly on a non-selected table. Kind of like that REPLACE bug. I thought it had been fixed by vfp6 SP3, however, as I have had no trouble for a long while using SEEK()

I would test it with the simple SET ORDER/SEEK commands a while, if it's any different problem it should show up there.
