Quite. If statements are made, we have to have confidence they are correct. The only way to enforce that is to remain watchful. It is true for everybody- we do not take doctors entirely on trust, nor lawyers, nor politicians. An aware, watching "public" is crucial. I spoke out because I did not have confidence in something that was said. I was not alone, either.
