We do a great deal of work with SQL Server. We have used SQL Server in a Novell/NT mixed environment with a great deal of success. Our applications range from just a few users to 1,000 users with 400GB of data. SQL Server handles every situation very well.

I have a little experience with the stuff from Sybase. With an emphasis on little. There stuff that we have used (primily middleware to connect to mainframes) is expensive and the UI tools I have used are quirky at best. I cannot comment on performance or ease of use for developing SQL server applications.


Your develelopers that use ASA should have NO problem using SQL Server. We have sucessfully trained 2.6 developers to use VFP and SQL Server. People with any server background should have no problem.

Also, SQL Server has a number of advantages. Native NT implementation. It takes advantage of NT clustering and other native NT functionality. It can be used on the desktop with MSDE or the desktop version of SQL Server. It is a snap to install and administrate. The SQL Servers we have require little on-site DBA intervention. Just setting the machine to backup at a regular interval and sometimes adding disk drives or memory. Other than that this baby runs....
