Up until recently, we had still higher rates. ADSL is new, recently we only had something called "línea dedicada" - dedicated line. Not sure about the technology involved.

The main reason rates were much higher is that there was a legal monopoly by one company. They had exclusive rights to long-distance phone calls, Internet connections, and similar stuff.

This legal monopoly has ended November 2001. Now, prices are going down - but there is only one company currently offering ADSL. Other companies are making plans, but it will be a few more months.
