Keep in mind that installing MSDE is like installing the VFP data engine and no VFP interactive development environment. That's impossible to do I know, but its the same idea. Say you only have the VFP data engine installed. How would you modify the structure of a table without a command window? Not possible.

It is CRITICAL for you (and all you lurkers!) to keep this in mind. You DO NOT install MSDE on your development machine. You install the SQL Server Developer Edition (or the Standard Edition, or the Enterprise Edition). You ship MSDE to your clients with your app (.EXE) so your app can access the data. Uninstall MSDE from your machine.

It is EXACTLY the same thing. MSDE IS SQL Server. Period. It's *slightly* watered down, but they are the same thing.

Yes you can, it's called a named instance. You can install SQL Server and it is named whatever your machine name is, say MyMachine for example. You can install another named instance of SQL Server, Bob, for example which would be MyMachine/Bob.
