I did a lot of research on this last week. Microsoft's list of supported devices is very incomplete. The HP3500c doesn't appear on the list, yet it is supported.

A quick way to find out if your scanner fits the bill is to start Paintbrush and see if you can scan directly from it. If it allows it, your scanner is WIA compatible.
