If you have control over what scanner/platforms your users will use, then I'd adapt my choice to that.
If not, you have two choices:
1. Use wia in xp and kodak in the rest. The problem with this option is that twain drivers still work on xp, but I don't think you can access them via wia automation. I think you have to go with a 3rd party ocx for this.
2. Use a commercial ocx or library, which will guarantee that you can access the scanner regardless of the platform used.
I've never played with something like eztwain, so I don't know if it would work on an XP + wia-compliant scanner. Ah, the hoops we have to jump through just because Microsoft doesn't like things "not invented there".
