Make sure that workstation set up to use TCP/IP protocol not Named Pipes which is quite slow. To do that, run SQL Server Client Network Utility on WS and check that TCP/IP is enabled and is the first protocol on the list.

>We are experiencing extremely slow performance with Sql Server 7 on some of our workstations and others are sailing along beautifully. We have installed the latest Service Patch (4). For example, a simple select statement takes 1 second to process on some workstations and more than a minute on others. The workstations appear to have the same software and network adaptors. The workstations with slow performance do not appear to have problems connecting to other servers.
