I wonder how you would select the correct SMITH in a table with 50 SMITHS, with the bound column being just the last name. But all of this discussion has stimulated my thinking and experimenting, and I finally came up with a solution that behaves exactly as I want it to. It's not generic enough to bother reporting it here (I ended up setting the RecordSourceType to an SQL statement for various reasons), but I do want to thank you for your input and suggestions.
