I think, when the name is ended on 'a' in most cases it's logical to assume, that it's a woman's name. I made the same mistake, as Tracy, and I was sure about her gender before I saw her picture :)

BTW, my second son's name is Ariel and every time I call to some official organization and tell them the name, they start to refer him as she...

People who are around me address me by my middle name which is Cullen, I don't think they even know my first name:) Since my name appears as Dawa Tsering, I decided to use my first name.
