Going Beyond Remote Views to Full Client Server with SQL Server - Tuesday, January 8th, 2002 at 17h15
Rick Hathaway will show how he solved difficult problems of synchronizing large distributed research data sets from different offices of his company. He will show how to get beyond some of the limitations in the Fox Pro view creation tools.
Attendance was good: 18. Members came from all corners of the metro area --- from Elgin to Highland Park to Naperville to Downtown.
Our speaker, Rick Hathaway, showed us some of the problems in maintaining parent-child tables in a two-tier paradigm. His solution has been to discard remote views in favor of sending data transformation requests to SQL server stored procedures via SQLExec commands.
The presentation gave rise to discussions of three tier programming and alternate techniques for generation of primary keys.
Others topic that arose were modeling, use case analysis, design patterns, frameworks, com objects, Ms office automation, getting a handle on huge applications that need conversion to VFP.
Dave Stowell invites members to download and test his dup checker utility which he developed using com objects.
www.ravenslakeconsulting.comA programmer who had recently moved from Atlanta mentioned that the user group there had taken on a joint programming project for a charitable cause as a learning/collaboration adventure. We decided to create some space in our next meeting to hear more about a support network for families with children with heart defects. Such a project might allow us to focus on a simple real world case study that does good for the learners and the beneficiaries. Members with different areas of strength and interest could contribute. The first step is to discuss it in terms of modeling tools and see where things go from there.
Next month's topic was announced: Rick Borup on integrating PDF documents into desktop and internet applications with 3rd party tools.
We took a collection to help get Rick up here from Champaign. Also we agreed to a $5 per meeting dues to give us the ability to pay for other out of town speakers. We want to alternate local and nationally known speakers -- to develop our own capacity and to draw in new members. Lots of interest in seeing if we can get Ken Levy, the new VFP product manager.
